“Beneath the roar accompanying the release of Windows 2000 on
Thursday is a conspiratorial whisper. There’s an alternative to
Microsoft’s sophisticated new business operating system, it says,
and it has a name we’re hearing more and more: Linux….”
“I have great hope that Microsoft will be strengthened by
this competition with Linux,” said Anthony Awtrey, group
chairman and computer consultant, “because, God knows, this lack of
competition has turned out some of the worst software I’ve had to
work with….”
“Stripping down Linux to run a few essential programs on a
server is what Awtrey calls being able to “hot rod the system.” And
that means it can be “blindingly fast,” he said, unlike Windows
software that comes with a ton of memory-eating features, whether
you need them or not.”
