Forbes: Corel pins its hopes on cheap PCs, Linux

“Corel has been losing money for three years. But things may be
looking up. Second-quarter earnings are due out today, and the
company says it expects to report a profit of 14 cents per
share…”

“Corel officials see the sub-$1,000 PC market as a good vehicle
for disseminating WordPerfect Office, its flagship product. More
than half a dozen PC makers, including Compaq (nyse: CPQ) and
Gateway (nyse: GTW) are now pre-installing Corel’s suite on some
entry-level models.”

“Corel also sees a golden opportunity with Linux, the upstart
operating system that could turn out to be a formidable challenger
to Windows.”

“We’re bringing an awful lot to the Linux party,” says Cowpland.
“This has the potential to be a very large volume business, and we
think it’s going to take off next year.”
