GnomeMeeting, a H.323 videoconferencing application for Linux and FreeBSD by PhD student Damien Sandras, wins this year's Belgian Information Technology prize for the best University Project. ----------------------- The Belgian Journalists on Information Technology award the IT prize each year to the four best University projects and is sponsored by major IT and Telecoms companies including Microsoft, IBM, Orange, Siemens, and Oracle. GnomeMeeting (http://www.gnomemeeting.org) was written by Damien Sandras as his final year project for his degree in Computer Science Engineering at Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL, http://www.ucl.ac.be), Department of Computing Science and Engineering (INGI, http://www.ingi.ucl.ac.be/) in Louvain-La-Neuve. This program allows Linux and FreeBSD users to video conference with industry standard H.323 applications such as the Microsoft NetMeeting program for Windows. The program has proved extremely popular with users, and is now included in many Linux distributions as well as with FreeBSD. GnomeMeeting uses the GNOME desktop or the popular KDE environment. Audio is supported via standard sound cards and video can be used from capture cards or USB cameras. ILS and LDAP directories can be used, and H.323 protocol support is provided by the OpenH323 library written by Equivalence Pty Ltd (http://www.openh323.org). Damien is pleased to receive this prize, which comes just as he and a team of volunteers are preparing the next version of GnomeMeeting for release.
