Miguel de Icaza of GNOME fame has started a thread on the gnome
development lists to search for the best way of installing and
maintaining software with an easy interface. Since this issue is
not-GNOME-centered (GNOME/KDE front-ends would probably be built)
it raises interesting questions about how various packing systems
can be used to fulfill complete user-friendliness and
compatibility.
This is a very important point with the current trickle of
Windows-users likely to become larger in the coming months wanting
to base themseleves on easy and widely-available package
management, I have posted to this thread my ideas on a
distribution-neutral GNU-system which I’d like to see happen.
