InfoWorld: Group offers free Linux-based encryption software

“FreeS/WAN (Secure/Wide Area Network) software, installed on a
PC running under the Linux operating system, lets the PC serve as a
secure gateway in a virtual private network (VPN), according to
Hugh Daniel, project manager with FreeS/WAN, in Toronto.”

“A VPN allows companies to securely use public networks while
saving on the cost of leased lines for wide-area
communication.”

“FreeS/WAN encryption software adds additional security to such
networks, Daniel said, without modifying their operating systems or
applications software. “This is so the Net has privacy, like
curtains for voting booths,” Daniel added.”
