“…taxpayer dollars have been summarily committed to Windows CE
thanks to the award this week from the Department of Defense (DoD)
of a $248 million contract for ‘wireless mobile computing devices
and related software,’ which will include the WinCE operating
system.

Symbol Technologies, in Holtsville, N.Y., won the five-year
contract as the prime contractor for the devices which will be used
for logistics tracking, transportation, and shipping of materials
and personnel for all branches of the military throughout the
world. …Symbol had no choice but to offer a solution with WinCE,
said a Symbol spokesperson, because of the evaluation criteria. …
In particular, specifications called for a ‘one-quarter’ size
VGA display
, said Goldman and that requirement left Symbol
no choice but to offer WinCE
, whose OS can be specified for
various screen sizes while the Palm OS is written to a single
screen size.”
