“Spyglass now is a first-string technology player in two hot
market segments — wireless information devices and
interactive television — with customers that include
Motorola, Nokia, Sony and Toshiba. Senior Writer Todd Spangler
spoke recently with Doug Colbeth, chief executive of Spyglass.”

What are your key technology assets?

We have a range [of technologies], from the Device Mosaic
embedded browser and embedded mail applications to microservers
that sit inside the device. That’s about half of our total software
revenue. On the server side, we have an interesting
content-delivery system called Prism. Prism is really important for
wireless networks because it enhances the overall performance of
the network. Prism does all the repurposing of that content for
you.”

Sun Microsystems and Oracle recently introduced
wireless content servers. How does Prism compare?

Oracle’s Portal-To-Go is really designed for Oracle
databases.
But there are a lot of other databases out there.
We’re database-agnostic. We’re also operating system-agnostic,
which Sun isn’t. We’re doing a Linux version of Prism.”
