“But the moves come at a time when Sun faces new threats.
According to analyst Rick Doherty of Envisioneering, 40 percent of
all e-commerce sites are hosted on Sun servers, making Sun the top
e-commerce platform. But it is losing ground to Linux and faces an
impending threat of Windows 2000 and Intel’s companion IA-64,
Doherty added….”

“Linux also represents a threat. Linux could sap Sun’s
popularity if it is deployed often enough that software vendors
port apps to Linux before Solaris
, said Don Kaberon, manager
of computer resource management for Hewitt Associates.”

“Sun’s Ingram said Linux, which lacks clustering and management
functionality offered in Solaris, will build momentum by attracting
developers to Unix.”
