Project was working on an open source “Unix-like system” since
roughly 1984.”

and the GNU folks needed a kernel. An obvious marriage of state,
yet not a happy one, said Stallman, who poured kerosene on a raging
flame war in the Linux developer community by insisting that
finished Linux systems should be referred to as “GNU/Linux”…”
