“Sun is readying INternet-based office productivity software
that the company hopes will change the way IT thinks about thin
clients, application servers and, potentially, all PC-based
applications.”
“In its current version, StarOffice needs a PC to run. Engineers
from Star Division and Sun are retooling the suite for use with a
Java front end, to be served up by application service providers
using server software called StarPortal. It’s expected to be
available for early users by the end of October and in general
availability early next year.
‘StarPortal represents an interim generation of service provider
software,’ said Wohl Associates analyst Amy Wohl. The next
generation will bring applications written specifically for the
Web, so that IT will not need to install and maintain the apps, she
added.”
