IT-Director: Developers say yes to Oracle on Linux

“Following unexpectedly strong take-up in an early adopters
program, Oracle has announced the general availability of Oracle8i
on Linux. Oracle says that demand was split between the enterprise
and general business markets. Oracle says that there were about
20,000 registrants for early access in the first few weeks of the
program. It also notes that since the announcement of Oracle 8 on
Linux there have been 50,000 downloads from the Oracle Technology
Network.”

“Although the Oracle Linux program is in its early days, Oracle
claims that it is also seeing strong adoption outside the
development community, with over 800 paying customers taking a
Linux version of the product and half of these orders coming from
enterprise accounts. Chuck Rozwat, senior vice president of Server
Technologies said “Oracle8i on Linux comes with both Java and XML
built right in. Together Oracle and Linux offer the most
cost-effective way to deploy scalable Internet applications.”
