“A couple of weeks after it first announced it .NET platform,
Microsoft has started to roll out amore information about how it
will all hang together and, more importantly, it has come up with a
long list of companies that have signed up to support it.”

“Given that there are not really any new products within the
.NET platform, it is hardly surprising that Microsoft has managed
to come up with a reasonable number of supporters so quickly. The
list reads quite impressively with more than 100 partners already
signed up. The majority of these (more than 70) are ISVs who will
be developing for .NET. The rest are tools vendors (17), systems
integrators (10) and publishers (4). In addition to publishing a
list with all of the big names on it — including Great Plains,
Centura, Compuware, Seagate and ComponentSource — Microsoft has
ensured that there is a steady stream of press releases from
individual partners announcing their support for .NET. At the same
time it has listed 11 languages — including SmallTalk and Fujitsu
COBOL — that provide the required XML support.”

“So far, Microsoft has only proved its ability to bundle its
products into a neat package and to co-ordinate an effective
marketing campaign. Despite its messages of support, .NET has
nobody out there doing anything of any consequence.
What is
more, there must be some concerns to be expressed about any
architecture that is based upon XML and the relatively untried SOAP
mechanisms. .NET looks good in the brochure but needs to be
proved.”
