“While we have witnessed a number of IT organisations
restructuring over the last few months, the shake-out happening at
SGI appears to be the most fundamental of all. The company has been
clinging on to marginal profits, but instead of a fine-tuning
exercise has taken some far-reaching decisions. Among these are:
… A strategic relationship with VERITAS to enhance the file
system capabilities on IRIX and Linux …”

“The net effect of these announcements is a massive change for
SGI. The company has suffered recently from spreading its resources
across too many areas of interest. Now, with the partnerships it is
building, SGI will be able to concentrate on the areas that are
most likely to reward it with profitable growth. In particular
SGI believes that its future lies in the Linux and broadband
Internet markets.

While SGI has it’s own Unix operating system IRIX, it sees the
future as belonging to Linux and will work to take the
high-performance exploitation of NUMA to the Linux platform. The
company will work at the same time with Sybase to ensure that
Sybase Adaptive Server IQ will be able to exploit SGI’s NUMA
architecture. …a clever bundling of SGI hardware and data mining
software with Sybase business intelligence software could be
presented as a ‘Business Intelligence Appliance’ at a very cost
effective price for medium to large organisations.”
