“Nick Piggin recently announced on the lkml that he, Jens Axboe
and Andrew Morton all are in agreement that the anticipatory
scheduler is stable enough for inclusion into Linus’ mainline 2.5
development tree. He noted that there are some design issues with
the elevator API itself and process I/O statistics, however
acknowledging that it’s not the right time for a redesign of these
interfaces. The scheduler, they say, is ready for some mainline
exposure.

“Looking forward, Nick described Jens’ current efforts to make
the choice of schedulers be configurable at kernel compilation time
at least, possibly evolving into a configurable that could be
chosen/switched at runtime. Nick’s announcement, in hopes of
getting the anticipatory scheduler running as the default elevator
in the 2.5 tree, included a number of comparison benchmarks with
the current deadline scheduler. As we saw earlier, the anticipatory
scheduler offers some significant performance boosts, such as
noticably minimizing latency. Read on to see the actual
results…”
