“As the release of the 2.6 stable kernel tree approaches,
queries as to exactly when this will happen become more frequent on
the Linux kernel mailing list. It was recently asked if we can
expect the next stable kernel by the end of June, as suggested by a
recent eWeek article. Alan Cox called this suggestion ‘wildly
improbable,’ noting the sheer number of outstanding bugs left to be
fixed, some of which result in possible data corruption such as
long-standing issues with the floppy driver. When pressed, however,
Alan explained it’s not as bad as it sounds:

“I run 2.5.x continually on some non critical boxes. I do have
backups but even on 2.4 nothing says my disk wont suddenely fail
anyway. A lot of these [corruption reports] are corner cases, and
crossing off items one at a time, not ‘it eats lots of
computers…’

“Refer to Andrew Morton’s recently released ‘Must-Fix’ list to
see what’s actually needing repair prior to a 2.6.0 release. Of
course, prior to that we should begin seeing 2.6-test
kernels…”
