“2.6 Linux kernel maintainer Andrew Morton posted his first
kernel status report, dated August 4’th, 2005. He explained, ‘at
[the] kernel summit I pledged to put out weekly where-we’re-at
summaries, mainly so that subsystem maintainers could get an
estimate of when the next major kernel release will be, so they can
plan their merge windows.’ The merge windows he referred to were
explained earlier by Linux creator Linus Torvalds as part of the
improved development process in which major changes will only be
merged into the mainline kernel during the first two weeks after a
major release…”
