“Matthew Vernon is a Debian developer and a candidate for
the Debian Project Leader position. He maintains trn, word2x,
electric-fence, and other packages.“
“Linux.com: How do you see Debian fitting in with the rest of
the Linux community?”
“Matthew Vernon: I think we provide a mechanism whereby new
software can come to the attention of new users — once software
gets into Debian, it’s then easy for many users to download a .deb,
and start using and/or hacking upon that code, generating bug
reports and patches that can be sent back upstream, so enabling the
author to improve the software — this is what Free Software is
about, after all. Debian’s open BTS, and large number of Developers
enable us to do this with the ever-increasing range of quality free
software available.”
“I think Debian will continue to provide an advocate for Free
Software within the wider community of Linux users and developers,
and this is important to me — the whole Linux movement wouldn’t
have happened without Free Software, and it’s important that isn’t
forgotten.”
