“If you’ve yet to hear about it, XRacer is a free Linux
clone of the 3D racing game, WipeOut. It’s written by Richard W.M.
Jones, and can use Mesa or OpenGL for graphics. While
development is still fairly early, it seems to be very faced paced,
having had multiple new versions released withing a single day,
many times. At version 0.94, and with a major reworking planned
shortly, it’s already playable. The game at this point already
features basic racing, control via mouse, keyboard, and the
recommended joystick, textures, sounds, other cars, some scenery,
powerups and speedup spots, a single demo track, and the ability to
create your own tracks + scenery with the (shareware) AC3D
modeller.”
“Though the game engine is mostly complete, the game itself has
a long way to go before there’s much to play in it. As previously
mentioned, it only come with one demo track, and currently uses
AC3D as its modeller, which can make it difficult to make your own;
AC3D’s shareware version does not allow you to save. Also, the
current implementation of the game engine makes improper use of
OpenGL’s display lists. What that means to the end user, is that it
currently will not work with Mesa 3.1 or 3.2 – only 3.0.”
