“Shortly before the event began, we got wind of a change in the
programme for the Linux-related events. Jon “Maddog” Hall was
to speak on the 10th of December, followed by two other speakers.
In the last moment, the programme was changed – the two speakers
after Maddog were apparently going to give highly negative
anti-Linux presentations. One was by someone from SCO who was to
speak about “Migrating *from* Linux to the Enterprise” (implying
that Linux was *not* ready for the Enterprise), the second by a
person from Bombay who runs computer classes there, who was going
to speak on “Why you shouldn’t use Linux….“
“The next day, we went to the venue. We had failed to get any
official invites to attend the Linux sessions, but someone was
supposed to make available passes. This person suddenly became
unavailable….”
“He then proceeded to “prove” that Linux was bad by pointing out
that the first program executed on boot is the “loader” program –
written by Richard Stallman in its earliest version, and then other
programs. He pointed out that since all these programs are written
by different people, Linux was unsuitable for use….”
“And then he made a mistake – he asked if there were any
questions.”
