Linux Journal: Linux: A Year in Review

“For the past ten months, I have been doing my weekly spot on
the radio. In this last edition of the year, I will review the
topics I have covered during the year and project (that means make
some guesses) as to what in coming in 2000.”

“The non-surprising thing happening is that the Linux market
continues to grow. It is nice to see a good product with little
marketing doing well against the huge marketing efforts of
Microsoft. Linux has been the fastest-growing server operating
system in 1999 (Solaris being number two).

“The other major growth area is, of course, the desktop.
Products such as Applixware, StarOffice and WordPerfect have made
it possible for Linux to become a productive desktop environment
that interoperates with other platforms. Sun’s purchase of
StarDivision and their decision to make StarOffice available for
free to everyone certainly gave Linux a boost in this area.”
