“Net Talk, an Israeli/New York company specializing in an online
java chat/speech client, has announced that they will be releasing
a Linux version of their product, which enters into official beta
test on Monday, July 10, 2000.”
“Specifically written for Red Hat Linux, this may be one of
the first java-based browser chat clients for Linux that uses text,
speech (including a behind-the-firewall setup), and animated
“cartoon” avatars set in composed “environments.” The java
applet download is one of the smallest on the market, given the
abilities of the chat client: only 50K.”
“The current version 3.0 has had major upgrades, including the
Linux client addition. Avatars have been redone, the environments
redrawn, speech has been stabilized and improved. Because of
limitations on browsers available for Linux, this appears to only
run in Netscape or Opera for Linux, with java activated. All
functions of the Windows versions of Net Talk have apparently been
ported to Linux, including file transfer, private messaging, text
chat, speech chat, and the avatars and their environments.”
