“I was ecstatic to see the 3dfx Linux site that went online just
a few months ago, especially when I saw just how much information
was available. With driver packages, Glide developer kits, and
specifications for a free texture compression technology known as
FXT1, the site houses a great deal of information for the Linux
community. And as a Voodoo3 owner, I’m always excited to see
info about driver updates made at Linux Games courtesy of Joseph
Kain at 3dfx. Curious to get to know the man behind the name and
exactly what was going on at 3dfx that Linux users would want to
know, I contacted him about an interview….“
“Tell us about your current role at 3dfx and how you ended up
there. What in particular drew you to 3dfx?”
“Joseph Kain: My current role is doing Linux support. I monitor
3dfx’s Linux related newsgroups and help people with Linux driver
installation issues, and development issues. I also handle driver
builds and have taken up maintaining the Linux Glide drivers now
that Daryll Strauss is working with Precision Insight to create
XFree86 4.0 based DRI based drivers. In the past I wrote a demo
that 3dfx showed at Linux World in August 1999.”
“I actually started with 3dfx in the summer of 1996 as an intern
and returned every summer until I was hired as a full time employee
doing Linux work last June. As an intern I didn’t do much Linux
related work for 3dfx. As graduation was nearing I noticed that
3dfx had an open Linux position so I came in and applied for the
job.”
