“Helios, god of the sun, runs his chariot on Linux wheels. Or,
to report something slightly less silly, Helius, an Orem,
Utah-based broadband satellite applications developer, intends to
base its new gateway service on Caldera’s OpenLinux–less than a
month after announcing a line of satellite routers designed with
Lineo’s help.”

“The most recent addition to Helius’ line of
Internet-via-satellite enhancement products, the Helius Optimized
Gateway, is designed to improve Internet services over satellite,
including browsing, file transfer protocol (ftp), virtual private
network (vpn) links, e-mail and other services. The Gateway is
targeted at satellite-based service providers (SSPs) and network
operation centers (NOCs). It can be used with any IP-compliant
satellite gateway to improve performance, thus reducing satellite
bandwidth cost.”

“One of the factors in reducing that cost is the use of
OpenLinux from Caldera Systems. “The Helius Optimized Gateway and
Caldera’s OpenLinux provide a very powerful, low-cost solution for
Internet access anywhere and anytime with reduced bandwidth and
higher performance. This is the kind of news that SSPs and NOCs
have been waiting for,” said Drew Spencer, Caldera’s CTO. Helius is
“working to bring true Linux-based solutions to the Internet.”
