commercial shipments of Linux alone would increase by 25% each year
to 2003. Keeping in mind that Linux is freely available for
download on the Internet and that more than one person might
install Linux from a single CD and the growth of Linux is
tremendous.”

The software industry has been unable to keep up with the
huge influx of Windows users turning to Linux who need access to
Windows applications. The result is applications that either
emulate or run Windows concurrently with Linux to allow access to
Windows applications.

“The Wine project was started in 1993 by Bob Amstadt as a way of
running Windows 3.1 applications from Linux. Fairly early in its
development Wine was handed over to Alexandre Julliard who
continues to direct development of it today.”
