“Tim Cook speaks softly, but carries a big stick. With the
public debut of his project at the Los Angeles conference of the
American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), the soft-spoken,
ex-Marine and ex-hospital IT tech is swinging a stick that could
crack open an area where the open source force could really make
its mark.”

“FreePM, or Free Practice Management, is the brainchild of Cook,
about half a dozen regular developers and many more active
contributors. The project’s aim is a lofty one, and thus far
unattainable by mortal man: Making sense out of medical IT
systems.”

“Forged from free software available at the project site and
currently in beta testing, FreePM is an XML-based medical
informatics system that aspires to replace the cumbersome,
pre-packaged, inflexible, incompatible and unaffordable clutter of
medical applications and databases that currently infest the
world’s hospitals, clinics and medical offices.
Cook also
intends to make the informatics process simpler for medical
personnel, who want specificity, support and simplification from
these projects, and would love to see it offered at a price
substantially lower than the rates offered by proprietary
companies.”
