LinuxPower: Review of TurboLinux 6.0 WorkStation

[ Thanks to Erik

I will here review TurboLinux 6.0 based upon the freely
available ISO image download.
Another point that needs to be
made before you read this, is that most of the problems I encounter
with these distributions, like sound configuration, are fixable for
the experienced user with some text file editing or downloads. But
for the sake of this review I leave the problems as non-solvable if
they cannot be resolved using the included system tools.”

“TurboLinux still uses their RedHat based text mode only
installer. In this GUI installer world this is obviously a minus,
especially when it comes to catering to those new to Linux. For
those of us who has been using Linux for a while it feels like
getting reacquainted with an old friend. The installer offers some
nice features that most of the new GUI installers fail to offer,
like the option to install directly from TurboLinux’s ftp
server….”

“TurboLinux has ditched their old AfterStep based Turbodesk
solution and adopted GNOME with Enlightenment 0.16 as their default
desktop instead. This I think is a wise choice, since TurboDesk was
beginning to show its age. I do think however that TurboLinux
should have included the latest Gnome-compliant release of
AfterStep in order for people who used TurboDesk under earlier
releases to be able to keep the windowmanager they had gotten used
to. In addition to Gnome, Turbodesk offers KDE and IceWM too. I
think the inclusion of IceWM is nice bonus for Gnome users, since
many people feel that the overlapping features of Gnome and
Enlightenment can be detrimental to the integrated feel of the
desktop. The sad point of their IceWm inclusion is that they
haven’t bundled IcePref, the IceWm GUI configuration tool.”
