“Open source developers are an amazingly prolific bunch.
That’s clearly a Very Good Thing, but it can make finding the truly
interesting projects a challenge, regardless of how you care to
define interesting (more on this below).”
“That’s why we’re launching a new feature on
LinuxProgramming.com: Highlight Projects. These are open source
projects that deserve special attention, or at least more attention
than they normally get. A project can be chosen for Highlighting
because it provides source code that nicely handles some very
difficult task, or because it does something unique, or perhaps
it’s a good project that’s desperately needs some volunteers, or
simply because it’s an especially handy tool for
programmers.“
Note that we won’t be publicizing things like KDE, GNOME,
XFree86, Apache, and Samba, since those projects already have high
enough profiles both inside and outside the Linux community that
they don’t need our help. The intent is to help drum up community
support for some of the deserving, but less well known, projects.
And if this helps programmers find some first-class source code
worth reusing, so much the better.
The first Highlight Project, Internet C++,
is already posted on LinuxProgramming.com. Internet C++ is a
very nicely done C/C++ compiler plus virtual machine written by Bob
Dayley and some helpers.
