“It’s deliciously ironic. While Microsoft, the world’s largest
software company, continues to be viewed by the business community
as the very epitome of modern capitalism, it has a genetic aversion
to any form of competition. Meanwhile, over in the Linux world,
which many pin stripe suits seem to regard as a form of
techno-communism, there are Darwinian battles of almost titanic
proportions between genuine competitors.”

If one were to take notice of all those gushing stories
written in mainstream business publications, one could come away
with the impression that the captains of industry actually think
monopolistic control of the software market is a good
thing.

“By the same token, if you accept what the mainstream technology
press’s coverage of events in the world of Linux desktops, you
might walk away with the impression that competition is definitely
a bad thing. Worse, you might actually be worrying that there’s
some kind of split coming in the Linux camp that will echo those
schisms that saw commercial Unix wither in the face of Microsoft’s
united front.”
