“World domination. Fast.” — Linus Torvalds.”

“It’s been 9 years since Linux was first released to the general
public. Given the current state of Linux today, has Linus achieved
what he set out to achieve? Although Linux fanatics may affirm that
question, I think most of us would be nay-sayers to that. However,
if you shorten that quote to just: “world domination”, we really do
have a much more interesting question to ponder about.”

The media is always interested in the question “Will Linux
survive against its competition?” The answer has been the same
since Linux’s early years: it has already won against its
competition.

“The goal of building a world-class free operating system which
“doesn’t suck” has clearly been achieved; critics may say that
Linux does not satisfy them, but they ignore the fact that it
certainly fills a critical role at many universities and businesses
around the world. It’s not only an excellent research platform for
those entities; its role as a general-purpose Internet or Intranet
server is clearly rising, and even some home users have made it
their operating system of choice. Why is this the case? In a
nutshell: Linux is a brilliant development platform.”
