LinuxUK: Interview with David Faure of KDE

“What do you mainly do for the KDE project?”

I am maintaining the file manager which is Konqueror, and I
was maintaining KFM; the first version of it, and I am working on
the rewrite of KFM, but Konqueror is not just a file manager – it’s
a browser; it’s a viewer for any kind of documents.

“So you are mainly working on Konqueror…”

“I am also working on KOffice as well.”

“I was going to mainly ask you about Konqueror and KOffice,
because Konqueror seems to be largely the center of KDE in terms of
implementing lots of viewing embeddable components into Konqueror.
Do you think it will turn into a large application that will do
everything in terms of viewing?”

“Well, the fact that it can do all that doesn’t mean it’s a
large application meaning that it’s like a very generic framework
that is able to embed any kind of thing, and at the moment we use
that for embedding any kind of viewer, and we keep coming up with
new kinds of viewers for new kinds of formats which you want to see
in the file manager. For instance now you can even preview a KWord
document or a KSpread document directly into Konqueror in just the
same way. As for the future people are talking about embedding mail
clients into Konqueror. This is of course technically possible, but
we think this is going to far. At some point you want it to be a
viewer and not the main application where you can do
everything.”
