LinuxWorld: Heretic II [Review]

“Back when Doom was the latest and greatest first-person
shooter, a few developers at Raven Software chose to create
alternative worlds based on its engine. The same bunch has repeated
the trick; this time, they’ve used the Quake engine to power
Heretic II.”

“As a Heretic II player, you experience a third-person view; in
that respect, the game is similar to Tomb Raider. You move your Elf
back and forth across the screen, using keyboard or mouse controls,
or both. I prefer to use only the keyboard, since it gives more
precise movement control. The controls can be reconfigured, so you
can use any keys you like. You will find yourself jumping a lot, so
make sure to choose a particularly accessible key for that
action.”

“New offensive and defensive spells in this version include
Meteor Storm, Iron Doom, Firewall, and Teleport. Weapons include
the explosive Phoenix Bow, the Storm Bow (for area attacks), the
Hellstaff (for continuous fire attacks), and several versions of
your handy Pikestaff. As you progress through the game, you will
learn some of these advanced spells and find some of these weapons.
In the end, you may even find that the Firestaff makes for one of
the best hand-to-hand combat weapons ever.”
