Lothar is a new open source project which aims to facilitate
hardware detection under Linux.

The purpose of the Lothar project is to make hardware
configuration easier in Linux, by providing hardware detection, and
a nice graphical interface. It actually allows Ethernet and Sound
Card configuration. The Many Linux users often complain about the
trouble they go through when trying to configure hardware under
Linux. At MandrakeSoft, we think that this is not acceptable
anymore, we have already started to make Linux easier for the
beginner with Linux-Mandrake, and will go further in this direction
with the next release. But we also think that it is now time that
Linux-users have the ability to use their PC-hardware easily,
without having to edit several configuration files. With Lothar,
all your Ethernet, SCSI or Sound Cards are automatically detected
and set with the correct parameters.

According to Abdulmajid Sharif, one of the main supporter of the
project, “one of the big advantage of Windows 95/98 was the
Plug-n-play capability. Lothar brings some of that ease of use to
Linux.”

Lothar has been initiated and is supported by the Linux-Mandrake
team. A lot of work has already been done. The Soundconfig module
is very usable right now.

Lothar is an open-source project published under GPL (GNU
General Public License). It is opened to the Linux community.

Anyone can contribute to this big project especially
programmers, graphical designers, testers, packagers, maintainers
and translators.

If you wish to join the project, just have a look at the Lothar
