MacCentral: Mac version of StarOffice next summer?

“Now that Apple and Sun are working more closely together,
Mac users have been hoping that Sun’s StarOffice product will come
to the Mac platform sooner. According to the updated StarOffice
Frequently Asked Questions Web site, Sun is “targeting availability
[of version 5.2] by summer 2001.”

“On the FAQ page, it was asked, “How committed is Sun to having
StarOffice software available on multiple platforms and as a
standalone product?” Sun’s answer: “Our commitment to the
standalone product is firm. Although we are excited about
revolutionizing the productivity software market with StarPortal,
we realize that standalone software is important now and for many
years to come. The StarOffice suite will continue to be an integral
part of the total application solution.”

“With the code now open, the possibilities of it being ported to
the Macintosh platform are wide open, although the project would be
a monumental task, according to a number of programmers with whom
MacCentral spoke.”
