Greetings!

Due to problems with our email server, the project has been
advancing more slowly for the last week. However, there are couple
of things to announce.

Current versions:
Stable: 1.2.5 (Mad King)
Devel.: 1.2.6-beta2

Midgard 1.2.6-beta2 released

The second beta for Midgard 1.2.6 was released on February 7th
as expected.

This release brings many frequently requested improvements to
the application server, including better handling of other
character sets and general object copying/moving.

This release is a development version and we don’t recommend
deploying it on production servers. Some bugs have already emerged,
particularly affecting the MacOS X Server platform, and work is
underway for correcting those.

Please send any comments or questions about this release either
to the Midgard mailing list or directly to Alexander Bokovoy
(bokovoy@minsk.lug.net).

The release can be found in both source and RPM format from the
Midgard Web site:

Upgrading to Midgard 1.2.6-beta2 safely

Alexander Bokovoy has posted an utility to the Midgard mailing
list which might be of interest to users wanting to test this new
release with their normal Midgard database.

Once this new utility has gone through some testing we also look
forward to including it with the final release.

Mailing list problems

Our mailing list and all developer email accounts on our primary
server have been unavailable since February 8th. This is because
our connection provider has done some modification to their
firewall, blocking SMTP traffic from our server.

This problem has clearly demonstrated how dependent an Open
Source project is on its mailing lists, as most work on the project
has been practically halted due to developers not being able to
reach each other.

Some good may be coming out of this, however. We’re now aware of
the problem and have already been in talks with some project
members about setting up mirror servers elsewhere. We’ll announce
those once they become available.

While I’m writing this, the problem still exists, but now we
have a temporary mailing list in place thanks to efforts of Emile
Heyns and Ron Parker. The temporary mailing list can be reached at
midgard@mi-recordz.com

We’re synchronizing the subscriber lists between the servers so
nobody has to re-subscribe.

Calendaring and Midgard

There has been some discussion on using Midgard as a Web-based
personal information management (PIM) system. Midgard’s group
implementation is already good enough to serve as a simple contact
manager, but besides this a good calendaring system would be
needed.

Last week David Guerizec announced his proposal for the Midgard
calendar API. Documentation of the system and a test application
implemented in PHP are available from his site.

Once the system has gone through some evaluation, we look
forward to including it into the Midgard libraries.
