“Aaron, Circus Systems formed in 1999, at that time were you
already considering Linux as part of your product roadmap or did
that come later?”
“Aaron: Circus’ primary focus is and has always been on
open-source hardware and software. Although most of the folks in
the company have been using Linux for years, we’re not focusing
solely on Linux. For example, our CTO is on the NetBSD kernel
development team. As a result, we’re planning on releasing both a
Linux and a NetBSD distribution for our wearable. After that
whoever develops the most software wins. :)”
“You mentioned to me before that you had “big plans for Linux”,
can you elaborate for us a little more on that?”
“Aaron: The *nix’s have been mature enough to offer a viable
alternative OS on the desktop for years. Now, however, they have a
whole new vehicle for which they are not only viable, but are the
logical best choice. That vehicle is wearables. Circus is
looking to make the hardware upon which applications can be built
which will bring wearables into common-day usage. For example,
we’re looking to focus on voice-based applications. GPS is also a
big opportunity – provided you have the right kind of security in
place. These are both good examples of applications for which a
small, powerful, and open-source solution is the only good
alternative. They’re not the only application that falls into that
category, by any means.”
