“The long-time difficulty of porting applications and device
drivers among Unix variants has proven frustrating to many
developers. Fortunately, Unix vendors are beginning to question
their divide-and-conquer strategy, and last fall, an initiative
dubbed Project Monterey was announced by IBM, Intel, SCO (Santa
Cruz, CA), and Sequent Computer Systems. This will see a gradual
merging of SCO’s UnixWare with technology from IBM’s AIX and
Sequent’s PTX operating system.
