New count shows strong Linux OS dominance has strengthened
since October.
by Dwight Johnson
The Internet Operating System Counter has just published the
results of its newest OS query conducted from January 13, 1999 to
January 31, 1999.
The January count processed 1,191,755 hosts addresses from the
RIPE host count and the .edu domain.
The numbers from
.edu look pretty different than the other results.
According to Hans U. Zoebelein who conducts the survey:
“To avoid any possible conflict, the .il (Israel) domain was no
longer included in the survey. The gentlemen from comsec.co.il who
had triggered the Israel wide alarm in 10/98 didn’t provide any
proof until today which would have backed up their claims which
included “copying and deleting of files” and looking for loop holes
in routers and mail software. Stuff which queso cannot perform.
“A person which is affiliated with the Israeli Internet told me
that COMSEC didn’t even present any log files to them.”

Below is the summary which includes the hosts of the RIPE Host
Count plus the .edu domain. Results of the FTP, News and Web
