NewsBytes: Open Content Encyclopedia Makes First Steps Online

“First there was open source software, and then there was an
open, collaborative Web directory, and now an open content online
encyclopedia has launched, taking peer-reviewed submissions
from academics and experts and providing its content to anyone who
wishes to use it.”

“It’s very much in its early stages, but Nupedia hopes it can
use the Internet to tap the enormous global pool of human knowledge
to create a comprehensive, searchable encyclopedia organized by
topic and alphabetically.”

“Nupedia is an “open” content project, created by San
Diego-based Bomis Inc in a similar vein to open source software,
such as the Linux operating system, and the dmoz.org Open Directory
Project.”
