“Richard Stallman, developer of the free GNU operating system
that served as a basis for Linux and champion of free software,
received the Yuri Rubinsky Memorial Web Award at the closing of the
eighth International World Wide Web Conference Thursday. Stallman
took the opportunity to deliver, by videoconference link from
California, a plea for less patenting of software.”

“The Yuri Rubinsky Memorial Web Award is named for the founder
of Toronto-based SoftQuad Inc., who also founded the Banff
Publishing Workshop in Banff, Alta., and was the author of several
books. He died in 1996.

“Among the sponsors of the award are Sun Microsystems Inc. and
Microsoft Corp.”
