Thanks to Phillip

This author quite accurately describes a pain countless people
have suffered – installing Microsoft software.

” I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Word twice. Same
problem.

Thinking that it could be a missing or corrupt driver, I
uninstalled and reinstalled Office 97 twice. Same problem.

Maybe this CD was corrupt and the others used were OK. Nope.

I next thought it could be that the normal.dot file, which is
the Word startup template file, could be corrupt. I tried deleting
it and then using Word. Froze again.

Maybe some other file was corrupt, perhaps in the Windows
systems folder? I ran Norton Disk Doctor. No corrupt files or disk
problems. Tried Word. That didn’t fix it either. “
