NY Times: Toiling Not So Secretly in Switzerland, a Windows Emulator Gains on Microsoft

“The project is known as Wine, which is short for Windows
emulator.”

“So far, the project cannot be considered a success. Most
Windows programs run only partly — if at all — with Wine, and
using it still requires a computer geek’s special skills. But some
20,000 different users visit the Wine site on the World Wide Web
(www.winehq.com) every week. New versions of Wine are being issued
via the site every couple of weeks.”

“A Corel executive says the company is rapidly expanding this
effort and that other software companies are considering joining
the project.”
