Oracle Denmark is the first Oracle company which is going to
support Linux. Not only will Oracle Denmark support the Oracle
database on Linux but also questions about the Linux operating
system.
This new initiative will be announced thursday the 24th June
1999 at Bella Centret and will be celebrated with “Free Beer” for
all Linux enthusiasts who show up. Bella Centret is housing the
European Oracle User Group
(EOUG) this year and it’s expected to be the largest IT
conference in Danish history with some 4000 delegates from all
over the world. The Linux meeting will take place Thursday the 24th
from 2 pm till 6 pm. Admission is of course free – as is the
beer.
At a panel meeting a few months ago Linus Torvalds, the author
of Linux, was asked what he expected of the future. The answer was “free beer”. “We
would like to meet Linus here in Copenhagen” says Premium Service
Manager Mogens Nørgaard, Oracle Denmark, and continues “It’s
hard to lure Linus to Denmark so we expect that ‘free beer’ will
make him come” says Mogens Nørgaard with a smile.
“The reason we offer support for Linux is simply that our
customers want it”, Mogens Nørgaard stated. “Small companies
can often introduce Linux into their organisation without signing
up for support on the operating system because they have the
expertise in-house and don’t need the assurance of an outside
supplier. However,” Mogens Nørgaard continued. “as Linux is
being introduced to larger organisations with responsibilites
towards shareholders and other parties, the need for a formal
support agreement is evident. Since so many organisations choose to
run their mission-critical applications on Oracle, it’s really a
logical next step for us to offer support on Linux proper”.
