“Given that all GNU/Linux software is freely available, various
distributions of the open source operating system have the unique
opportunity to offer their base and applications in a set-top-box
or appliance configuration in a tightly-integrated complete
package.“None of the 80 plus Linux distributions I’ve tried, make any
attempt at pre configuring sensible defaults for the applications
bundled with the OS. Because of this, I’ve concluded that their
motto must be, ‘If it launches its done.’ Many of these bundled
applications may have jumped the gun. Often times, these
applications won’t launch and will sometimes even crash. The
applications seem to be thrown in with little regard for
inexperienced users.“I fail to see the reason or logic behind this, especially
considering they have access to the source code and can easily make
customizations to achieve a more seamlessly integrated whole
product. They all compile their own custom packages and build their
own default skel anyway. I would argue that their work is far from
done…”
