“It seems a very long time ago when Linux was still a hobbyist
OS that it was especially interesting to tinker with. Now however,
the OSes tinkering-only days are gone and uptake has climbed
spectacularly. The atmosphere surrounding it is vibrant because of
the various companies and interest groups starting to add their
weight behind the Linux/OSS movement. A recent study by market
researcher IDC pointed out that ‘Linux PC market share in 2003 hit
3.2%, overtaking Apple Computer Inc.’s MacOS. And the researcher
expects Linux to capture 6% of this market by 2007…'”
