PC Week: Linux’s [desktop] trickledown effect

“Vendors, eyeing growing customer demand, deploy OS on the
desktop

OEMs are moving forward with plans to support Linux on
forthcoming PC and notebook lines, even though they acknowledge
demand for the open-source operating system is small but
growing.”

“At the same time, a growing number of Linux distributions of
and desktop applications for the operating system are pouring out
from vendors such as Caldera Systems Inc., Corel Corp., Red Hat
Software Inc., SuSE Inc. and TurboLinux Inc.”

“…hardware makers say they are still taking a wait-and-see
approach to widely promoting and supporting Linux on all their PC
lines. ‘It’s not a push strategy but a pull strategy,’ said Will
Townsend, manager of platform marketing for Compaq’s Deskpro line
of business desktop PCs, in Houston.”

“Despite this cautious approach, current users of Linux on PCs
are seeing changes in the industry that indicate a groundswell of
support for the operating system.”
