“Leading the vendor charge today, SGI Inc. and Dell Computer
Corp. detailed significant, yet separate, open-source software
plays. SGI tiptoed into the open-source waters by unlocking the
source code to its OpenVault storage area network software layer.
Dell, meanwhile, is stepping up its commitment to peddle hardware
running the open-source Linux operating system.”

“The timing couldn’t be better for the open-source community,
which recently lost some steam due to the beleaguered Mozilla
browser project. With the browser’s first release still months
overdue and the project suffering the recent exodus of two key
officials, the Mozilla effort is fighting to stay above water.”

“SGI’s OpenVault announcement comes after one month of publicly
flirting with the notion of open-source software. By uncorking the
code to its OpenVault software layer, company officials are hoping
to provide developers with an efficient removable media management
solution for SANs.”
