PCWeek: Torvalds relishes ‘tension’ of competing with Microsoft

“Torvalds said Linux is “on the right track” insofar as getting
corporate attention. The 2.2 kernel, for instance, includes support
for symmetric multiprocessing. By the end of the year, he expects
to see more high-end features for Linux, which will scale to more
than four CPUs by the end of the year.”

“It runs on more than four CPUs right now, but it doesn’t
scale,” Torvalds said.”

“About efforts to create standards for Linux, Torvalds said
Linux development is somewhat standardized by default — people
keep adding to it, but they’re writing to the most current
kernel.”
