“Why did ABIT decide to produce their own distribution rather
than working with or contributing to the existing
distributions?

“The key point is that other distributions didn?t support ABIT
motherboards fully. For example, with our BE6 and BE6-II models,
where we incorporated the High Point ATA/66 controller chip, anyone
who wanted to use Linux had to modify the kernel. We didn?t want
anybody NOT to buy our motherboards because they thought it was
incompatible with Linux. And let?s face it; a lot of ABIT customers
are high-end technophiles, the same people who use Linux.
Furthermore, ABIT foresees Linux continuing to expand, and we
wanted to be part of that expansion.”

Is ABIT aware of the violations of the GPL that exist with
Gentus (The lack of distribution of the source to it, and the fact
that some GPL-derived code is under a different “ABIT License”. If
so, what are ABIT’s plans to remedy this?

“We have released 99% of the source code. The 1% that remains is
for the ABIT PerMon Tool Set. We are aware that there may be some
issues with this. To make sure there are no problems, we are doing
a complete overhaul and making a new PerMon Tool Set, which won?t
be in violation. We are writing the source code and software
ourselves rather than use that written by others.”

“What is ABIT’s view on the Open Source movement and it’s impact
on the computing industry?”

“I believe that Open Source is good for everybody, and I feel
excited about its possibilities. The main benefit is that other
people can improve the parts that I write, just as I have improved
what others have written. The more people modifying the source
code, the better….”
