Performance Computing: Integration: Opportunity Knocks

“For all the chest-beating that goes on proclaiming that BeOS,
FreeBSD, Linux, Mac OS, OS/2, and commercial PC UNIX are superior
to Windows, the combined sales of these alternatives barely
registers compared to Microsoft’s hegemony on Intel-based systems.
People willingly pay more for their copies of Windows 98 (and
Windows 95, for that matter) than for Red Hat or Caldera Linux.
Comparing features, value, and technology, you’d think Windows
users were out of their minds. And don’t get me started on using
Windows NT in the server room. How can you trust a server OS from
the same people who brought you Bob?”

“That’s my distillation of the rants that come to my inbox every
day. I respect those readers who have the luxury to not put more
money in Microsoft’s pockets. Most of the rest of us feel cornered.
The users we serve, the managers we report to — the entire
organization — marches steadily in lock step to the Windows
drumbeat.”

“If you’re hoping someone will replace Microsoft as king of the
desktop hill, forget it. As long as people want to play games on a
PC, Windows will remain in the lead. And if you’re one of those
hard-headed types who insists on running Netscape’s browser just
because it isn’t Microsoft’s, it’s time to find another way to
exhibit your discontent. Running Netscape on your PC isn’t ticking
Bill Gates off. It’s only keeping you from seeing the increasing
amount of imaginative content only visible to Microsoft
browsers.”
