SAN DIEGO, April 9, 2002 — Lindows.com, Inc. announced six
months ago the goal of bringing choice to the personal computer and
today the San Diego-based company announced a significant
milestone, the release of Sneak Preview 2. Lindows.com, Inc. is
offering a further glimpse of the company’s progress to “Insiders”
(www.lindows.com/signup), a highly interested group of LindowsOS
supporters prior to launching their first official release,
LindowsOS Version1, later this year.
“Lindows.com is not about selling an operating system,” said
Michael Robertson, Chief Executive Officer of Lindows.com. “It’s
not too different from needing a car, nobody says, ‘I need an
engine,’ they say, ‘I need a car’ and most times, what they really
mean is that they need transportation. It’s the same with a
computer. They’re not buying an operating system or a Pentium
III(r). Nobody needs an operating system, they need a solution,
which will help them communicate, entertain, educate, or get their
work done.”
One of the new features showcased in LindowsOS Sneak Preview 2
is Click-N-Run(tm) (www.lindows.com/clicknrun), a powerful new tool
that opens the door to a world of high-quality software solutions
by allowing LindowsOS users to instantly zap software to their
machines with one click. Lindows.com, recognizing the
time-consuming hassle of installing new software, has rolled out
the state-of-the-art one click process. The streamlined technology
beats any other current method of installation with its ease of
use.
LindowsOS users will be able to browse a warehouse of software
titles in a rich graphical presentation via the Warehouse
(www.lindows.com/warehouse) tab on Lindows.com or by launching
Click-N-Run from their desktop. Once in the Warehouse, users can
read descriptions of products, view screenshots, compare products
and, in a single click, download and install the title of their
choice. Never before has it been this easy to peruse software
titles and add them to your computer.
The Lindows.com staff has seeded the warehouse with a few
programs to demonstrate the Click-N-Run technology. “Our hope is to
have hundreds of great software titles for every conceivable need
in our warehouse in the near future,” added Robertson.
Lindows.com is currently fine-tuning a publisher interface at
publish.lindows.com where Insiders, and other interested users,
will help identify and package the best software titles which will
power Click-N-Run.
Other significant feature enhancements include the ability to
view and print the major file formats without purchasing additional
software — including Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint,
Microsoft Excel files — view www.lindows.com/filetypes for a
complete list.
Lindows.com reports that improvements have not been made in the
ability to run Microsoft Windows software titles and installing
LindowsOS on more obscure hardware configurations. The company
reports that marked improvements in those areas are scheduled for
the next preview.
Lindows.com, Inc. states that Sneak Preview 2 is not a completed
product and is best suited for those willing to provide input after
the easy five-minute installation process on a spare machine. On a
machine with Microsoft Windows 98, the LindowsOS install is even
easier. After downloading the installer, users simply double-click
and go. There’s no need to even create a CD. And as long as the
“Friendly-Install” is selected, users can switch between Microsoft
Windows 98 and LindowsOS with a simple restart of their
machine.
